I can Overcome

The month of October is recognised as Black history month. Most people in different quarters celebrate and have various activities to commemorate. As a people we have come a long way through many hardships, struggles from even before you and I came on the scene. Forget not your heritage, and the bravery of our ancestors; their courage, their unity brought them success by the strength of their hard work and determination.

Let’s look at our- A achievements and setbacks – celebrating success from slavery age also means overcoming the mental slavery of the negatives that so often plagues us, low self- esteem, lack of self confidence and the little pimples of defeat.

Let us revive our heritage, through the little proverbs, poems, songs and quotes to name a few. Do you remember the basic things of life we did so enjoy? This life journey of challenges has seen people of colour rise from the gutter of darkness to a way of liberal freedom from discrimination to equal rights. We live in a society today where the majority of Cultures can have good interactions in a humane and civil manner e.g. the freedom to voice our opinions in a democratic way. We can accomplish this by being forthright but respectful, share our beliefs & values and not being ashamed of who we are.

What is the legacy you and I can leave for our children for the next generation?

Our fore fathers did not give up, they were heroes in their own right – “If physical death is the price that I must pay to free my white brothers and sisters from a permanent death of the spirit, then nothing can be more redemptive”.  Dr Martin Luther King – On learning of threats on his life, June 5, 1964. This quote been taken from:  http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/m/martinluth115063.htm.

We have inherited a great legacy, one that has taken us as a people from the journey out of the land of Egypt to a generation of continued hardships that saw our fore parents labouring tirelessly in the heat of the sun by their task masters. We have come a long way through many dangers toils and snares! We have overcome many challenges by God’s Mighty HAND.  The struggle continues but by the grace of God “our deliverance shall come one sweet day”.

Genesis 49 v 19 …a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.

Be Blessed
